L’Aventure du Sucre

sugar caneL’Aventure du Sucre is a museum about sugar in an historic sugar mill on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. The first sugar cane was planted by the Dutch in the 17th century. The French took possession in 1715, and by the end of the 18th century, there were 60 to 80 sugar mills. In 1810, the British won control of Mauritius, which gained its independence in 1968. All of that fascinating history is on view in an interactive exhibition covering more than 5000 sq meters.

Displays show not only how the cane is grown, processed and turned into sugar and rum, but the entire history of Mauritius is outlined. The visit ends (of course) in the gift shop with tastings of sugar with varying degrees of molasses and, finally, rum.

L’Aventure du Sucre is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week in Beau Plan-Pamplemousses. The three Mauritian sugar groups that created LAventure du Sucre are Constance & La Gaiete S.E. Co., Ltd.; Deep River Beau Champ Ltd., and Beau Plan S.E. Co., Ltd.

At L’Aventure du Sucre, you’ll learn that there’s more to sugar processing than just the sweet stuff. Bagasse, the fibrous part of sugar cane that is left once the juice is extracted, used to be burned as waste. However, it now is burned to produce electricity. As early as 2002, more than 40% of the electricity produced in Mauritius comes from the sugar factories’ power plants.
