Sharing Uchinanchu Aloha in Hawaii

Okinawa FestivalOK, Road Trip Foodies: surely you’ve always wanted to enter an Andagi Eating Contest! You get two chances over Labor Day weekend — if you’re traveling in Hawaii — because there will be two andagi contests at the 27th Okinawan Festival in Kapiolani Park, Honolulu, Hawaii: September 5, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. and September 6, 2009, at 10:05 a.m. Entrants chomp down three andagi as quickly as possible — which doesn’t sound too difficult. The andagi, or Okinawan doughnut, is an all-around Festival favorite.

But, maybe you’d rather try the anadog: the Okinawan version of the corndog (hot dog on a stick that is dipped into andagi batter and deep fried). There are more choices, of course,including champuru, pig’s feet and yaki soba!

The festival is sponsored by the Hawaii United Okinawa Association, the umbrella organization for 48 clubs whose members are descendants of Okinawan immigrants. Proceeds support the HUOA’s mission of preserving, promoting and sharing the Okinawan culture.
