Raspberry Festival

Raspberry Festival in IdahoThis Road Trips Foodie has never sampled raspberry shortcake, but that’s one of the tempting treats to be offered up between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. August 1, 2010, at the 18th annual Raspberry Festival in Cottonwood, Idaho (it’s always the first Sunday of August).

These aren’t just any raspberries. They’re grown harvested at prepared by the resident nuns of the Benedictine Monastery of St. Gertrude, 465 Keuterville Road, Cottonwood, Idaho. Sure, there’s a quilt show, car show, arts and crafts fair — but, the stars of the event are the raspberry products for sale (did I mention there’s gonna be raspberry shortcake?). Proceeds benefit the Historical Museum at St. Gertrude.

Of course, raspberries aren’t the only food being served that day. There’s a Pancake Breakfast outside the Museum from 8-10 a.m. The lunch, served in the high school gym next door to the Museum, features barbecued beef sandwiches — and raspberry shortcake!

This festival is dedicated to Sister Wilma Schlangen (1915-2010), who tended the St. Gertrude’s raspberry patch for decades and provided inspiration for the festival.
