National Cherry Festival’s in Michigan

Your Road Trips Foodie‘s favorite summer treat is the sweet cherry. Fortunately, one of the midwest’s best known foodie extravaganzas is the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Michigan. This year’s edition, the 85th, takes place July 2 through 9, 2011.

It includes all sorts of yummy special events, and you can find ’em all on the online schedule. Highpoint, as usual, is the Cherries D’Vine. This epicurean event (starting at noon July 3) is a culinary showcase of the cherry and the grape, a melding of local agriculture.

From July 4 through 8, visitors can hop a shuttle to the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station operated by Michigan State University Extension in Leelanau County for the Cherry Connection. Besides the guided orchard tours, there are exhibits and samples of the newest cherry products and technology inside the station.

Don’t forget to check the website for the cherry recipe of the week (Cherry Chili anyone?).
