Chainat Pomelo Festival

Submitted by on July 23, 2011 – 12:08 amNo Comment

In North America, we’re used to seeing oranges, grapefruit, lemons, tangerines and limes, but there’s another tasty citrus fruit more common in Southeast Asia: the pomelo.

This tangy fruit is celebrated with an annual festival in front of the city hall in Chainat, Thailand. (This year’s dates are August 19 through 28, 2011).

The featured variety is the locally-grown specialty: Khao Tang Kwa — round with smooth skin and a thick husk, it has a sweet-crisp faintly sour (but not bitter) taste.

Like the rest of the citrus family, pomelos grow on trees. It resembles a large grapefruit.
