Spinach Festival

Submitted by on August 30, 2011 – 12:44 amNo Comment

Centerpiece of the Spinach Festival in Lenexa, Kansas, on September 10, 2011, will be the World’s Largest Spinach Salad — and, yes, Road Trips Foodies, you can stop by and take a bit between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. that Saturday in Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, 87th Street Parkway and Lackman Road, Lenexa.

Lenexa was once hailed as the “Spinach Capital of the World”. Many German, Swiss and Belgian families immigrated to the area, purchased land from the Shawnee tribe, and grew bumper crops in the fertile soil. In the 1930’s, Lenexa became famous for its superior quality spinach, and the festival celebrates that bit of agricultural history.

There’s an arts & crafts show, children’s activities, and such, but visitors also can sample specialty spinach dishes at the Spinach Garden Café by the Lenexa Historical Society.

You can even participate in the annual spinach recipe contest. Download an entry form online, and bring your goodie to the Legler Barn Museum between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. September 10.

The Spinach Festival is organized by the City of Lenexa in partnership with the Lenexa Historical Society.
