Cider Week in Virginia

Submitted by on November 9, 2012 – 8:01 amNo Comment

It starts today (November 9, 2012), Road Trips Foodies, but if you’re traveling anywhere in the area through November 18, 2012, you’ll have a chance to sip at Cider Week in Virginia.

There’s something scheduled each day. It does seem strange to this Road Trips Foodie that the calendar for the final day — November 18 — is blank. No matter: you can taste and explore cider every other day of the foodie fest.

Over 100 restaurants and shops in 30 cities will promote cider during Virginia Cider Week. The week includes 20 special events in Blacksburg, Charlottesville, Crozet, Richmond, Roanoke, Staunton and Washington, DC., plus cider promotions at shops, cafes, bistros and fine dining restaurants.

We’re talking hard cider, of course — the elixir made from fermented apples that was the toast of the town in colonial times. According to the event organizers, John Adams attributed his health and long life to a tankard of cider before breakfast, and Thomas Jefferson’s champagne-like cider, made with Hewe’s Crabapples, was his “table drink”.

Eight purveyors of hard cider will be participating (a list is online).
