You don’t know a place till you’ve tasted its local specialities, dug into its regional cuisine.

With this truism in mind, Via Culinaria was born — a gourmet initiative that puts visitors on any of seven culinary paths throughout the SalzburgerLand region of Austria.

From fish to cheese to sweets, from internationally acclaimed restaurants to alpine huts and organic farms, the diverse year-round tips and recommendations are perfectly suited to travelers with ambitious gourmet tastes.

The paths (or themes) double as a great excuse to crisscross the city of Salzburg and SalzburgLand.

It leads you out on seven different culinary pathways to the most delicious products our region has to offer – you will be able to sample them at local producers and on the farm, savor traditional specialties at inns with roots extending back for centuries, or have them served to you at internationally acclaimed restaurants where the culinary artistry is quite beyond compare. The culinary pathways for gourmets, fish fans, beer and schnapps aficionados, meat eaters, sweet tooths, cheese freaks and hut lovers are sources of constant surprises, home to over 200 highly recommended, exceptional addresses.

Start on the “Pathway for Fish Fans” then switch to, say, “Cheese Freaks” or “Sweet Tooths” — and gradually you’re dining your way through the region.

The order of your route, the season and the hours are all up to you, allowing you to design your trek around the amazing array of non-culinary attractions in the surrounding areas.

The essential ingredients for the Via Culinaria are regionality, originality, quality and authenticity. Eckart Witzigmann, dubbed “Chef of the Century” by Gault Millau, is the honorary figurehead of the Via Culinaria.
