Velvet Ice Cream Opens for the Season May 1

Submitted by on April 15, 2013 – 8:24 amNo Comment

ohio_velveticecream2013You know that summer’s on its way when Velvet Ice Cream‘s Ye Olde Mill opens for the season at 11324 Mount Vernon Road, Utica, Ohio (map), but this year, Road Trips Foodies, you have an extra reason to roll on by after 11 a.m. May 1, 2013.

Velvet celebrates 99 years with 99-cent ice cream cones on opening day.

In addition to enjoying a scoop of famous Velvet Ice Cream at 1970s-era pricing in the 19th Century-style ice cream parlor, you can watch ice cream being made from the viewing gallery, take a free tour or check out the ice cream museum.

If you can’t make it on May 1, consider Memorial Day Weekend (May 25 through 27, 2013), when the 39th Annual Utica Sertoma Ice Cream Festival is held — they served 42,000 scoops at last year’s event.

Those of us on a road trip definitely will enjoy the free WiFi while we’re there — remember: they close for the season on October 31.

Velvet Ice Cream has been a family-owned and operated business for nearly 100 years. Joseph Dager founded Velvet Ice Cream in 1914 and four generations of Dagers have since run the company. Velvet produces more than 5 million gallons of ice cream every year from its headquarters on the 25-acre grounds of Ye Olde Mill.
