Feria del Cabrales in Spain

spain_feria-del-cabralesHere’s a relatively obscure foodie fest in a relatively obscure town in a relatively obscure corner of Spain: the Cabrales Cheese Competition in the Asturias village of Arenas de Cabrales in the heart of the Picos de Europa Mountains of northwest Spain (map).

Always held on the Sunday in August, this year’s date is August 25, 2013. Cabrales, also known as Quesu Cabrales, Queso de Cabrales or Cabraliego, is a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) awarded, Spanish semi-hard, fatty blue cheese, prepared within the administrative region of Cabrales Council.

At this celebration, folklore and tradition come together with the tasting and sale of this distinctive product, considered as one of the world’s finest blue cheeses. During the festival there is a demonstration of the traditional cheese-making processes employed to make the product as well as a traditional games tournaments, exhibitions, round tables, open-air parties and a procession/pilgrimage.
