Today is National Ceviche Day in Peru

peru_cevicheRoad Trips Foodies on the ground in Peru will be able to celebrate National Ceviche Day in style.

All sorts of events are on deck today to celebrate the culinary concoction most definitely Peruvian. (Ceviche, according to Wikipedia, is typically made from raw fish cured in citrus juices, such as lemon or lime, and spiced with ají or chili peppers. Additional seasonings, such as chopped onions, salt, and coriander, may also be added. Ceviche is usually accompanied by side dishes that complement its flavors, such as sweet potato, lettuce, corn, avocado or plantain.)

Here’s one option: Sumaq, a five-star hotel in Machu Picchu, Peru, is celebrating Ceviche Day by providing interactive family cooking classes led by the hotel’s sous chef. Guests will prepare three types of ceviche while listening to authentic Peruvian music.

The Peruvian government created the holiday back in September 2008 to honor ceviche as part of Peru’s national heritage.
