Pearland, TexasFruit aficionados are pointing their cars toward Pearland, Texas, for the fifth annual Arts & Crafts on the Pavilion. Not because of the art mart, but for the chance to check out the foodie scene.

There will be a Food Truck Court both Saturday (October 6, 2018) and Sunday (October 7, 2018) in the Pearland Town Center, 11200 Broadway Street, plus craft beer by the city’s first microbrewery, BAKFISH Brewing Company. Event hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Although the crops grown around Pearland include all sorts of fruit including figs and oranges, the city just east of Houston is best known for its eponymous crop. National Art Honor Society students from Shadow Creek High School will paint a pear beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in honor of Pearland’s 125th anniversary (to be celebrated next year).

The history of Pearland began in 1861 with a grant of land applied for by the Houston, Tap and Brazoria Railroad Company, although the town wasn’t platted and named until 1894. Several mergers later, the train tracks belonged to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company. Settlers traveled to Pearland by rail, and the agricultural produce traveled out. These days, there’s no passenger traffic, but the old depot (moved and restored) is the headquarters of the Pearland Area Chamber of Commerce and the Pearland Convention & Visitors Bureau.
