The Arches of Easter…with Bread Sculptures

Submitted by on March 18, 2019 – 8:26 amNo Comment

Arches of Bread, SicilyYour Road Trips Foodie would love to see this springtime display in San Biagio Platani, a small town in southern Sicily.

Called the Arches of Easter, it’s an event that involves creating a passageway of temporary “Gothic” arches, and then decorating with bas relief made of painted bread dough, herbs, and beans (like the putto at left).

The interior of the church is likewise decorated with edibles (everything used is local, including the sugar cane stalks and willow for the structures).

The website for the event, centered on Easter (which is April 21 this year) is all in Italian, so there’s much more about it I can’t explain. There’s more in an article from last year on Atlas Obscura.

Check out the video for more information on this unlikely but lovely village craft tradition.
