Coffee and Conservation in Central Indiana

Submitted by on February 24, 2020 – 8:20 amNo Comment

Coffee beans, Rainforest AllianceNope. Coffee doesn’t grow in Central Indiana, but interest in conservation and wildlife does. Road Trips Foodies traveling through Hendricks County the afternoon of March 21, 2020, might want to stop off at McCloud Nature Park, 8518 Hughes Road, North Salem, Indiana.

Jessica Helmbold will talk about “Coffee and Conservation” at 2 p.m. She is Amos Butler Audubon Society Education Chair and Indy Parks Naturalist. Her presentation, hosted by Hendricks County Parks and Recreation, is a discovery of the history of coffee, and how the consumption of this “magical brew” affects the environment. There is no charge to attend, and no advance registration is necessary.

One of the biggest threats to the environment, and more specifically to rainforests, is the clearing of land for the production of staple crops such as bananas, pineapples, and coffee. Coffee can grow in harmony with the rainforest, but only if such conservation efforts are supported by considers.

Attendees will have an opportunity to sample different varieties of Rainforest Alliance/bird friendly coffees.
