A Champagne Bar in the Trees?

After much anticipation, Perchingbar–the world’s only champagne bar in the trees–is finally open.

In 2003, Olivier Couteau (then a fitness instructor) came up with a unique way to combine two of his loves: adventure and champagne. He decided to create an ‘accrobranche’ park (with obstacle courses in the trees) along with an original champagne bar perched in the trees.

He discovered the 10 hectare site in July 2005 in the Champagne region, near the small town of Verzy, in the heart of the protected natural regional park of the Mountain de Reims. After creating and constructing various tree climbing courses (as well as tree house that would eventually become the champagne bar), Olivier opened Arboxygène Aventure Park in 2006.

Four years later, in mid-June 2010, Perchingbar finally opened. While the exterior/basic structure of the tree bar is classic in appearance (constructed by the company La Cabane Perchée), the interior is very modern and trendy, designed by architect Germain Morisseau. The color of the wood is set off by the white leather cushioned seating around the sides with places for 12 people, and 4 ‘swinging chairs,’ also in white leather, suspended from the ceiling. With a total surface area of 80m², there is ample room for 20 people inside the bar and a further 30 on the terrace.

The bar area is at the far end of the tree hut when you enter, and has been constructed around the trunk of the tree which passed through the hut. The hut is actually on stilts, 5.5 meters from the ground, so the tree is not supporting any weight from the construction. There is a lounge area on the terrace with sofa and armchairs, and bar stools along the edge, with views of the treetops.

Access is via a sloped walk-way leading to a suspended 60-meter footbridge, which is in three sections. The footbridge at a gentle incline and so access up to the bar is very easy.

There is currently champagne on sale from four different champagne producers: Bollinger, Mumm, Louis de Sacy and Péhu-Simonet. The last two are local producers in Verzy. Contracts have been signed with these champagne houses for two years. Another four producers are under negotiation, so there will be eight different champagne houses/producers in total.

In addition to champagne, the bar sells different mineral water – particularly from unusual sources, such as the naturally sparkling water from Corsica – and a selection of fruit juices.

The bar is eco-friendly with all the lighting supplied by solar panels, capturing energy from the sun which is then stored in batteries for use as required.

Meals will be available at the Perchingbar, but will be supplied by a caterer, not prepared on site. The supplier is the nearby restaurant Le Relais De Sillery. There will be a choice of hot and cold menus which must be pre-ordered via the website The menus are currently being finalized.

The Perchingbar will be open from March 21 to December 31 each year, from Thursday to Sunday in the high season and just at the weekend out of season.
