Travel a Wine Trail in India

Next February, international wine consultant Kerry Damskey will take oenophiles, foodies and adventurers on a journey though the largely undiscovered wine region of India: Nashik.

Considered by many to be the foremost winemaking expert in India, Kerry and his wife, Daisy, have designed a trip that includes heritage sites, insider destinations and luxury accommodations plus traditional and contemporary Indian cuisine. There’ll be a stop at their winery in India, Sula.

One of India’s first wineries, Sula began with a duffle bag of grape cuttings and a dream. Rajeev Samant, who attended Stanford University, had a vision of turning his family’s table-grape land into vineyards. Working with Kerry, he created a 350,000-case winery located at a 2,000 foot elevation outside of Mumbai. In 1997, the duo planted French Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel grapes, varieties that had never before been planted in India.

The customized tour, limited to 16 participants, includes museums, galleries and antique shops of Mumbai; private tours and tastings throughout Nashik; visits to Jaipur, and Jodhpur. Dates are February 11-23, 2011. There’s more information online.
