Amish Country Wines: Breitenbach Wine Cellars

Submitted by on September 22, 2011 – 11:44 amNo Comment

Calling the Sugarcreek, Ohio area home since 1980 Breitenbach Wine Cellars harvests a slightly different crop than most of the farmers in the predominately Amish farming community.

Breitenbach Valley

Considered the signature series wines, Roadhouse Red, Frost Fire, and First Crush have received medals at both regional and international wine competitions. From blush to fruit, dry to sweet, red and white, Breitenbach features over forty different wines on their website.

Built into the slope of the Breitenbach Valley, the Bixler family is one of the largest wine-producing families in the state. Growing from 1,500 gallons of grape and fruit wine in the beginning years, Breitenbach Wine Cellars has increased annual production to over 100,000 gallons. Using 30 varieties of regional fruit and grapes (with the exception of the dry red wines), the Bixler family is just celebrating the first harvest from the nearby family-owned and operated High Valley Vineyards in the 2011 growing season.

Breitenbach Cafe for Stonefire Pizza

A staple in liquor stores across the region, a road trip to Breitenbach Wine Cellars gives wine connoisseurs a true appreciation for the attention to detail throughout the entire operation. Able to run 100 bottles/minute through their bottling operation, the quaint gift shop, tasting room, and café with outdoor seating paints a more leisurely picture. To put things into perspective, Breitenbach Wine has 780 distributors in Ohio and none of the seventeen employees hold the title of sales person.

Celebrating their uniquely Midwestern Dandelion specialty wine, Breitenbach welcomes spring and dandelions in May with the popular Dandelion Festival. Families are encouraged to bring their children for dandelion gathering, recipes, and even a 5K run. Visit Breitenbach on a Saturday afternoon in the summer and fall for a pairing of Fred’s Famous Barbeque (baby back ribs and chicken, your choice) or stone fire pizza set to the tune of acoustic guitar played by a local musician.

Carlisle Gifts in Walnut Creek

If a long-distance road trip brings you to Breitenbach Wine Cellars, plan ahead and make a reservation at the Carlisle Inn in Sugarcreek or just up the road in Walnut Creek or the Mohican Lodge State Park. The entire area is a fantastic spots for antiquing, shopping, and reconnecting with your friends and family, over a glass of Breitenbach wine of course!
