Did you ever wish you could be whisked away to Paris for a day to indulge in French food and wine? Well now you can with this appetizer spectacular. In celebration of National Champagne Day, Chef Robert Wiedmaier’s flagship restaurant, Marcel’s, 2401 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC, is having a $100 French Tasting featuring three specialty champagnes each paired with three extravagant hors d’oeuvres.

The tasting will showcase the highest caliber of champagne the restaurant has to offer. With over 40 varieties of champagne on its menu, Marcel’s has a lot of celebrating to do! On October 28, they will pick three of their best for a tasting flight. The “bubblies” featured will be Jacquesson Cuvee 734 from Dizy-Champagne, Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve from Mareuil-sur-Ay-Champagne, and Michel-Arnould Brut Rose Grand Cru NV from Verzenay-Champagne. Experts will be on hand to speak about the champagnes.

Each one was handpicked by Wine Director and Sommelier Ramón Narváez to complement a French hors d’oeuvre fit for royalty. Appetizers will include a delicate Quail Egg on Toasted Brioche, a briny, but succulent Kumamoto Oyster with Champagne Mignonette, and the subtle taste and texture of a Potato Blini blanketing the simple delicate flavor of Smoked Scottish Salmon and a dollop of Crème Fraîche. All of the dishes will feature Osetra Caviar, one of the most prized caviars in the world.

For the spirited ones only wishing to partake in the sampling of champagne, there is a tasting for $29 only at the bar, featuring three high-end wines selected by Marcel’s.

Champagne is a distinguished wine amongst sommeliers – to be designated with this name, the grapes must be exclusively from the small region of Champagne, France. The beverage was originally consumed by French royals during a coronation – rumor has it that a certain someone, Marie Antoinette, not only said “Let them eat cake…” but also “Let them drink champagne…” No need to question the legacy of Madame Antoinette, as she clearly understood the finer things in life.

Following the rise of the French middle class and the wealth that came with them, champagne slowly became accessible to everyone and is a popular beverage choice around the world today. It even has its own holiday – October 28 is National Champagne Day. This day commemorates the wine’s origins and celebrates the joie de vivre one gets when popping opening a bottle of bubbly for a special occasion.

Now that deserves a toast!
