Cooperative Wine Cellars of Languedoc-Roussillon

Submitted by on April 1, 2012 – 10:12 pmNo Comment

Studies by researchers from the General Heritage Inventory in France suggest that with 582 winemaking cooperatives in Languedoc-Roussillon and 109 distilleries in the Hérault, the region is becoming the symbol of the French cooperative winemaking movement.

Built mostly between 1905 – (Mudaison and Maraussan, visited by Jean Jaurès, are the oldest in France) – and 1965, the cooperatives feature a wide variety of architectural styles alive with Southern character.

Despite the recent series of winemaking crises, globalization and increasing urbanization, over 300 cooperatives still operate today.

The Cooperatives wine cellars in Languedoc-Roussillon site, posted by the Languedoc-Roussillon Region, invites Road Trippers to discover this fragile and little-known industrial heritage.
